Abstract

In recent years, there is an alarming rate of increase in dreadful diseases like Diabetes mellitus. To overcome this problem, the present research work was undertaken to find out the curative and therapeutic effect of Thottal Vadi Choornam (Mimosa pudica) in alloxan induced diabetic rats. The dried whole plant of Mimosa pudica made into fine powder form (Choornam) and dispensed to the diabetic rats in the dose of 100 mg/kg or 200 mg/kg, while control groups received glibenclamide (10 mg/ kg) for 4 weeks. Blood samples taken from the rats on first day, one week, two weeks, three weeks and fourth week after the administration of the trial drug and standard drug and blood glucose level was analysed and compared. Administration of Thottal Vadi Choornam showed a significant impact (P<0.001) upon blood sugar levels both at 100 mg /kg and 200 mg/kg body weight after three weeks of administration. The body weight of drug treated animals was increased significantly when compared with diabetic control group. From the result it is confirmed that the trial drug Thottal Vadi Choornam has potent hypoglycaemic drug in controlling blood glucose level.
