GC-MS ANALYSIS OF HYPTIS SUAVEOLENS ESSENTIAL OIL

Abstract

Hyptis suaveolens is a brushy aromatic shrub with hairy stems, about 2meters high with flowers which are purple or white, wrinkled and pointed, found in Nigeria, India, Bangladesh, Kenya, Sudan and Cameroon.The plant has been reported to possess a number of pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-diarrhoeal, antiulcer and antispasmodic. The aim of the study was to determine the possible chemical components of the essential oil of Hyptis suaveolens using GC-MS. The GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of eight bioactive compounds. The major constituents were Dimethylsilane (RT=2.09, MW=60, molecular formula=C2H8Si,%Area = 2.23%); 1,3,5-Trioxane(RT = 2.80,MW = 90,molecular formula = C3H6O3,%Area = 79.06%); Eucalyptol(RT = 7.89,MW = 154, molecular formula = C10H18O,%Area = 10.27%) and 1-Isopropyl-4-methylbicyclo [3,1,0 ]hex-2-ene(RT = 6.90,MW = 136, molecular formula C10H16, % Area = 3.00%). The presence of these phytoconstituents attributed to the pharmacological activities of the essential oil.
