Abstract

The search for a remedy or a prescription that can enhance sexual function and/or treat male erectile dysfunction has been an obsession throughout known history. Sexual dysfunction is a serious medical and social symptom that occurs in both men and women. Numerous central and peripheral neural circuits control sexual activity but still, a complete picture of the various factors that control human sexual activity is unknown. Impairment of one or more of these functional circuits may have a significant impact on personal, social and biological relationships. Sexual dysfunctions can be treated by both medical and surgical treatment modalities however; available drugs and treatments have limited efficacy and unpleasant side effects. Despite the increasing availability of effective conventional medical treatments, plant-derived and herbal remedies continue to be a popular alternative for men and women seeking to improve their sexual life. This review highlights some of the important plants that can be potentially useful in enhancing sexual potencies and treatment of erectile dysfunction.
