Abstract(RBIP-164)

Genera Ficus has a number of species amongst which extracts of Ficus bengalensis, Ficus carica, Ficus religiosa, Ficus hispida, Ficus retusa , Ficus racemosa, Ficus microcarpa posseses antidiabetic properties. These species are effective in controlling type 2 diabetes which is characterised by an inability to control elevated blood glucose level. Excess glucose and insulin resistance lead to a variety of health problems including heart disease, kidney disease and more. The patient may produce insulin in response to increased blood glucose, but cells are resistant to the effects and do not absorb the glucose. The bark or leaves of Ficus plants are extracted in water or ethanol and the extract is administered orally to the patient. Ficus extracts are effective in lowering blood glucose levels. Naturally occuring glycosides in the ficus plants are the active components in controlling diabetes by producing hypoglycemic effects. Ficus extract appears to stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin. They stimulate the utilization of glucose by the cells and peripheral tissues even in the absence of insulin. Hot water extracts are more effective than ethanol extracts in case of severe diabetes. So the ficus species includes a variety of plants which have antidiabetic effects.

Keywords: Ficus, hypoglycemic, diabetes, insulin.
