Benzimidazole derivatives play a vital role in biological fields such as antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiabetic, antispasmodic, and anticancer activities. Moreover Schiff bases have also been tested as potent antibacterial, antifungal, antitumor, analgesic and anti-inflammatory agents. Here substituted benzimidazole derivatives are obtained by condensation reaction of 4-chloro-2-nitroaniline and morpholine to give 4-morpholin-4-yl-2-nitroaniline which on reduction yields 4-morpholin-4-yl-benzene-1, 2-diamine. This compound on further condensation with 4-amino benzoic acid yields 4-(6-morpholin-4-yl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)phenylamine which on reaction with various substituted benzaldehyde gives Schiff bases. The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds are confirmed by IR, H1NMR and Mass techniques and screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis.
