Abstract (RBIP-52)

The term ADME (Adsorption Distribution Metabolism Elimination) is typically used in reference to nonclinical studies and being applicable without restriction to pharmacokinetic/metabolism investigations in humans as well as animals. ADME information is critical in all phases of a fully integrated drug development program. Scientists in the ADME disciplines have historically provided support to drug discovery teams, the unique expertise which they bring to the discovery process. Number of in vitro and cell culture techniques have evolved in recent years that have facilitated the assessment of intestinal permeability as well as absorption. Metabolism is also a key for drug discovery and there are many in vivo and in vitro tools available which tell us about systemic availability and other transformation rate. The main role of ADME is to identify the limiting barriers to optimal in vivo efficacy. As analytical techniques become more expeditious, these pharmacokinetics studies will play anincreasingly important role in drug design. The advent of new technologiesis providing hope that scientists in various ADME disciplines may able to participate more actively and productively in the drug discovery process.
