Abstract (RBIP-37)

It is apparent that a carefully consideration of many factors is necessary before proper selection of specified drug can be made for specific patient. Each patient is presenting with the unique set of variables. The concept of rational drug therapy used during past few years has been a theme of national and international gathering. In simplest words rational drug use means prescribing right drug, in adequate dose for the sufficient duration and appropriate time to the clinical needs of the patient at the lowest cost. The concept of rational drug therapy is age old as evident by the statement “ medicines are nothing in themselves but are the very hands of god if employed with reasons and prudence.” Rational drug use finds its significance in elderly as they use more prescribed and over the counter (OTC) drug than the younger population. Elderly patient should receive drugs only for well-defined indications at the lowest effective dose. Rational use of drug require that the patient receive the drug appropriate to their clinical needs, that for adequate period of time. The hit and trial method of drug combining should be avoided by rational and logical basis for bringing out fixed dose drug formulation. The steps taken for improving rational drug use will be helpful to reduce morbidity and mortality rate with the drug use
