Abstract

As yet, there is no curative or satisfactory treatment for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in any part of the world. The immediate need for new anti-HIV drug is a global concern. Currently available antiretroviral drug regimens are associated with rapid emergence of drug resistance and drug toxicity. People with HIV/ AIDS in developing countries cannot afford high cost of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Plant derived anti-HIV compounds offer great promise. This review describes plant derived chemical classes of anti-HIV agents eg. alkaloids, flavonoids, coumarins, tannins, terpins, lignans, phenolics, polysaccharides and proteins etc.
