INFLUENCES OF AFRICAN PEAR (DACRYODES EDULIS) OIL DIETS ON PLASMA LIPID PROFILE IN EXPERIMENTAL RATS.

Abstract

Influences of Dacryodes edulis and control oil diets were investigated in the plasma of rats fed control and experimental diets. Ten albino rats randomly assigned into two groups of five rats each were fed D. edulis seed, and control oil diets. After a seventeen day feeding trial, plasma AST activities were significantly higher (p≤0.05) in the control diet fed rats than the seed oil diet fed rats, while there were no significant differences (p≥ 0.05) in the plasma ALT and ALP activities of rats fed seed oil and control diets. Also, there were no significant differences (p≥0.05) in plasma Triglyceride, LDL and HDL cholesterol concentrations of rats fed Dacryodes edulis seed and control diets. Total cholesterol, coronary risk and athreogenic indices were not significantly different (p≥0.05) in the control and experimental diet fed rats. The foregoing shows that D. edulis oil is a potential source of healthy dietary fat which posses beneficial properties.
