Abstract

Streptozotocin (STZ) induce diabetic nephropathy (DN) in rats was monitored by measuring blood sugar ,urine volume, electrolytes, urinary proteins, blood urea and serum creatinine. Preventive and interventionary effects of perindopril (1 mg/kg, po) were observed in STZ (50 mg/kg, iv) induced DN. Perindopril pretreatment and treatment significantly (p<0.01) reduced blood sugar levels and urine volume in diabetic rats. Perindopril increased Na+ & K+ excretion in diabetic rats. In preventive and interventionary study perindopril reduced urinary protein, blood urea and serum creatinine levels. Effects were highly significant in preventive study as compared to interventionary. Thus perindopril prevents and ameliorates STZ induced nephropathic changes in diabetic rats.
