Abstract
The Cassia spectabilis leaf extract was evaluated for acute and repeated dose 28-day oral toxicity study in Wistar rats. In acute toxicity study, there were no clinical signs of toxicity and mortality even at dose of 2000-5000 mg/kg in 24 h and 14 day observation period. Hence LD50 value could not be determined. In repeated dose 28-day oral toxicity, the doses administered orally were 10% DMSO (Control), 50, 200 and 800 mg/kg and limit dose of 1000 mg/kg of Cassia spectabilis leaf extract for a period of 28 days. Biochemical parameters such as AST, ALT, BUN and creatinine did not show any significant (P>0.05) changes. Haematological parameters such as TEC, TLC, PCV and Hb concentration did not show any significant changes. No Significant decrease (P>0.05) in feed consumption and body weight gain. There were no gross and histopathological changes. This indicates that Cassia spectabilis is non toxic at given dose.
