EFFECTS OF CR002, A NUTRACEUTICAL ON TESTOSTERONE INDUCED BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA IN WISTAR RATS

Abstract
This investigation seeks to examine the effect of nutraceutical CR002 on testosterone-induced hyperplasia of the prostate of wistar rats. Hyperplasia was induced by subcutaneous administration of testosterone (3 mg/kg/day). Simultaneous oral administration of either CR002 (dose: 50 mg/kg/day, 100 mg/kg/day and 200 mg/kg/day) or corn oil &/or rice bran oil (vehicle) was also given. The weights of the rats were recorded weekly, and the influence of testosterone and CR002 on the weight gain of the rats was examined. Neither testosterone nor CR002 had any significant influence on the weight gain of the rats. Blood and urine samples were examined for pathological evaluations. Prostate glands were collected from all the animals and its size viz. length, width and thickness measured. A significant reduction in prostate thickness was seen in the rats fed with the test and reference item as compared to testosterone treated animals. All surviving animals were subjected to scheduled necropsy and detailed gross pathology evaluation on days 15 and 36; animals were sacrificed and various organs/tissues were collected including prostate, urinary bladder, kidney, testes, brain and seminal vesicle with coagulating glands. A significant decrease in absolute weight was observed for seminal vesicle, prostate, dorsal and ventral prostate in control, test and reference item groups as compared to the testosterone induced group. Moreover, in comparison to the testosterone induced animals, rats fed on test and reference items exhibited a significant decrease in relative weights of prostate, dorsal prostate and ventral prostate. We conclude CR002 can inhibit testosterone-induced hyperplasia of the prostate and therefore may be beneficial in the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
