Abstract
Kalanchoe pinnata locally known as ‘Pathar-chatta’ is used as a traditional remedy to treat diabetes and complications of this disease. In the present study, the hypoglycemic and antidiabetic activity of ethanol extract of leaves of Kalanchoe pinnata was evaluated in Streptozocin-induced diabetic rat. Streptozocin -induced diabetic rat were given ethanol leaf extract (150, 300, and 600 mg/kg, p.o., n= 6) of Kalanchoe pinnata or vehicle (distilled water, 10 ml/kg, p.o.) or standard drug glibenclamide (10 mg/kg, p.o.) for 28 days. Blood samples were withdrawn by tail tip vein- and were analyzed for serum glucose on 0th, 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th days by glucose oxidase / peroxidase method. In oral glucose tolerance test, glucose (2.5 g/kg, p.o.) was administered to non diabetic control, glibenclamide (10 mg/kg, p.o.), and ethanol extract of Kalanchoe pinnata (150, 300, and 600 mg/kg, p.o., n=6) treated rats. The serum glucose level was analyzed at 0, 30, 60, and 120 min after drug administration. The ethanol leaf extract of Kalanchoe pinnata (150, 300, and 600 mg/kg, p.o.) showed significant (P< 0.01) reduction of serum glucose level in Streptozocin -induced diabetic rat at 28th day. In oral glucose tolerance test, ethanol extract of Kalanchoe pinnata increased the glucose tolerance. It is concluded that Kalanchoe pinnata has significant antidiabetic activity as it lowers serum glucose level in diabetic rats and significantly increases glucose tolerance.
