DETECTION OF MYCOBACTERIUM TUBERCULOSIS COMPLEX IN LUNGS OF CATTLE AND GOATS BY MULTIPLEX-POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION.

Abstract
This study was designed to determine the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) among cattle and goats slaughtered in the Jos Central Abattoir, Plateau State. One hundred lung samples were collected fifty each from cattle (50) and goats (50) and assayed by the multiplex-Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for the detection of members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) which are the aetiologic agents of tuberculosis in humans and animals. Out of the fifty (50) lung samples from cattle, 9 (18%) were positive for MTBC by amplification of the 245 base pair (bp) fragment which is specific for this group of Mycobacteria. All 50 lung samples from goats were negative by m –PCR. There was no amplification at the 500bp target fragment. Results obtained in this study showed 0% prevalence of tuberculosis among goats and 18% prevalence in cattle. The study showed a high prevalence of tuberculosis among cattle sampled in the area study.
